Join Densho and Sharon Yamato for a screening of One Fighting Irishman at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church on May 29.

One Fighting Irishman tells the little-known story of civil rights attorney Wayne M. Collins and his uncompromising, decades-long defense of Japanese Americans who were coerced to give up their U.S. citizenship during WWII. Collins defended more than 5,500 people from being deported to Japan at the war’s end, and spent the next 23 years successfully representing them in the battle to restore their constitutional rights. At a time when wartime hysteria and racist hatred of American citizens of Japanese ancestry was sweeping the country, one attorney stood above the rest to fiercely defend the Constitutional rights of those the government considered the worst of the lot—those accused of being disloyal.

The night will start off with Glenn Mitsui’s short film, Wakasa Spirit Stone. Stay after for a post-film Q&A with both filmmakers. Don’t miss this powerful evening of film and reflection!
